According to the American CBS News network, Donald Trump appealed the ruling after the judge's ruling. It had decided that Illinois could exclude the former president from participating in the Republican Party primaries in that US state.

Trump was removed from the ballot on Wednesday for his role in the storming of the Capitol on January 6, 2021.

Judge Tracy Porter, who issued the decision, found that Trump violated the counterinsurgency clause of the Fourteenth Amendment to the US Constitution. For this reason, he will not be allowed to participate in the Illinois elections on March 19.

The same ruling was previously issued in Maine and Colorado. Trump also appealed those decisions.

Trump appealed Colorado's decision to the Supreme Court. Pending the higher courts' ruling, Maine has suspended Trump's expulsion.

In other states, politicians and judges also had to make decisions about Trump's election participation. The Michigan Supreme Court decided not to exclude Trump from the ballot. A Democratic minister in California also announced that Trump is participating in the elections in that state.

Many states are awaiting the US Supreme Court's ruling. This is likely to be decisive regarding the extent to which Trump is able to participate in the presidential elections this year.
