Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy was also convicted on Wednesday on appeal of illegally financing an election campaign in 2012. Sarkozy was sentenced to a year in prison, half of which was conditional.

According to the appeal judge, the 69-year-old former politician manipulated his campaign funds in cooperation with a public relations agency. According to the judiciary, he spent approximately 43 million euros, while the maximum amount was 22.5 million euros. The difference was hidden in the books. Sarkozy denies it and says he was not directly involved in building his campaign.

The court of first instance sentenced Sarkozy to one year in prison. He appealed this ruling, after which the prosecution requested a suspended prison sentence. He was able to freely await the ruling on the appeal.

Sarkozy announced through his lawyer that he would not leave the matter at that. Vincent Desry said: “Mr. Sarkozy is completely innocent. He took note of this decision and decided to go to the Court of Cassation.” This is the highest French court.

There are more cases pending against Sarkozy, including corruption and bribery. He lost the 2012 election. He could serve a year in prison in Wednesday's case under house arrest with an ankle monitor.
