Instead of Windows 12, there's a big feature update for Windows 11 also known as 24H2 coming this year. A previously unannounced feature has now been discovered in the preview build: Automatic Super Resolution technology enables AI-powered upscaling in apps and games and is meant to be a standalone replacement for AMD FSR and Nvidia DLSS.

Windows Developer Preview build 26052 has the option in graphics settings, as the screenshot posted on X shows. Below System -> Display -> Graphics Auto Super Resolution (Auto SR) can be activated. The job description roughly translates as: “Use AI to run supported games more smoothly and with more detailAnother screenshot shows that the function can also be assigned to manually selected Windows applications and not just games.

However, the function is hidden in the preview version and only becomes visible by previously entering a command and then restarting it. Another X user writes. The link for more information about Auto SR so far only leads to the DirectX developer blog, which cannot (yet) provide more details.

What exactly is behind Auto SR remains hidden for now. However, it can be assumed that Microsoft will at some point offer its own upgrade solution that is independent of the GPU manufacturer. It remains to be seen if this will happen with the major feature update also known as Windows 11 24H2, which will be released in the second half of the year.

    What is SR Auto?

Auto SR is now expected to be an upgrade technology that is not tied to specific hardware or software and is therefore independent of the manufacturer. It is hoped that many games that do not support AMD FSR, Intel XeSS, or Nvidia DLSS will be able to enjoy high-range resolution. However, the list says “Supported Games”, which again means certain requirements on the part of the game in question. The fact that Microsoft would offer the functionality as an extension of the DirectX interface suite for game developers to integrate into their titles would also be at least a conceivable scenario due to the link to the DirectX blog above.

With AMD Radeon Supersolution, there's already a driver-based upgrade solution that will likely work with all games. However, this doesn't work nearly as well with AMD FSR or Nvidia DLSS, where the games are specifically optimized.
