The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) announced the ruling in Valeeva's doping case on Monday, two years after the Winter Olympics in Beijing. She was suspended for four years.
The penalty was retroactive to December 25, 2021. The seventeen-year-old Russian will lose all the titles she has won since then, including the gold medal in the team competition at the Beijing Olympics.
The International Olympic Committee said in a statement that it is happy that the doping issue has been resolved. “The IOC is only now able to award medals. We sympathize with the athletes who had to wait two years for the final results of their competitions.” On the other hand, the Russian Olympic Committee announced on Tuesday that it would appeal against the decision to review the final classification.
“Providing stimulants to children is inexcusable.”
Valeeva tested positive in December 2021 during the Russian National Championships when she was fifteen years old. But the result was not announced until February 8, 2022, the day after she won the Nations Cup with the Russian national team. The medal presentation in the team competition was canceled due to this issue.
Russia's anti-doping agency Rusada stated after the Games that Valeeva had committed a crime for which she was “not responsible”.
That's why she wasn't punished at first. The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and the International Ski Union (ISU) successfully appealed this ruling before the Court of Arbitration for Sport. “Providing doping to children is inexcusable,” the World Anti-Doping Agency said in a statement on Monday.
