At least thousands of cars have stopped on a highway in Sweden since Wednesday morning due to bad weather conditions. The Swedish defense was called in to evacuate people. That reports SVT.

This concerns the section on the E22 road between Hørby and Kristianstad in Skane county, in southern Sweden. Nearly a thousand cars are stuck due to the snow. Many people are still trapped in their cars.

A police spokesman told Swedish Radio: “It's complete chaos.” Emergency services were unable to reach the scene during the day due to the road being completely closed.

In the evening, the first plow trucks arrived to remove the snow. “The problem is that the snow falls so hard that within half an hour it is completely covered by snow again,” explains a police spokesman.

Police, rescue and defense services have now begun a full evacuation operation. They are asking people to stay in their cars so they don't arrive at an empty car. It could also be dangerous for travelers to venture out with this amount of snow.

SVT Talk to someone who has been stuck since 11:30 AM (Sweden time). “We have no food or water. I left the car and walked two kilometers through knee-deep snow to buy food for me and my friend.”

The rescue operation may take several hours. Evacuees are being taken to a gym in Horby.
