Will the EUR.1 certificate for Switzerland become redundant soon?

Will the EUR.1 certificate for Switzerland become redundant soon?

Brian Rodriguez, December 13, 2023

Someone reads:

“We are supplying machines to various customers in Switzerland. These are of European origin and we issue an EUR.1 certificate for this purpose. We have now heard that import duties on industrial products will disappear as of January 1, 2024. Is this true, and if so, will these Is the document useful for Switzerland in 2024?

Member Service Response:

“As of January 1, 2024, Switzerland will abolish import duties on industrial products entering the country, regardless of origin. As a result, an EUR.1 certificate or invoice declaration upon import into Switzerland becomes unnecessary. In this country, all goods are considered products Industrial, excluding agricultural products (including processed agricultural products and animal feed) and fishery products.

Therefore, the abolition of industrial tariffs concerns goods that fall within Chapters 25 to 97 of the Customs Tariff. This is with the exception of some products mentioned in Chapters 35 and 38; They are classified as agricultural products. The measures do not affect agricultural commodities from Chapters 1 to 24. The current status of these products remains the same; From 2024, customs duties and any import restrictions and quotas will still apply. It may therefore be advantageous in 2024 to benefit from preferential trade with Switzerland through an EUR.1 certificate or invoice endorsement. The complete list of CN codes for which the import tariff will disappear can be downloaded as an Excel file from Swiss Customs via www.seco.admin.ch.

This can lead to significant cost savings for companies importing industrial products, such as machinery, into Switzerland. Once import duties are abolished, importers will no longer have to pay the customs duties that previously applied to industrial goods entering Switzerland. At the same time, exporters of EU goods lose their competitive advantage compared to exporters of goods that do not have a European origin, because the general customs tariff becomes zero, regardless of the origin of the goods.
