A judge in the US state of Texas allowed a woman to have an abortion because the fetus had a fatal condition. According to American media, this is one of the first cases since the abolition of the national right to abortion.
According to her attorney, the abortion falls within the medical exceptions in Texas’ very strict abortion law.
For example, pregnancy may entail health risks for a 31-year-old mother of two children. It would also jeopardize her fertility.
Texas has one of the strictest abortion laws in the United States. This procedure is only allowed in very limited cases. This is permissible when a woman’s health is at risk.
Doctors believe that the legislation is too vague. For this reason, they fear legal prosecution if they have an abortion. Illegal abortion is punishable by up to 99 years in prison and a fine of up to $100,000. Doctors can also lose their medical licenses.
In June 2022, the US Supreme Court overturned the landmark 1973 Roe v. Wade ruling, putting an end to abortion rights nationwide. Since then, several states have restricted abortion rights.
