Fourteen passengers were taken to hospital for treatment after an Emirates Airbus A380 plane, en route from Perth to Dubai, suddenly encountered severe turbulence. The panic on board was enormous. Some thought they would not be able to live to tell the tale.
The captain of Emirates flight EK421 from Perth, Australia, to Dubai in the United Arab Emirates, warned passengers on December 4 of turbulence, but immediately afterwards the entire Airbus A380 shook. Some passengers who were not fast enough hit their heads on the ceiling. Loose objects flew around. Photos of the damage to the plane are circulating on the X website.
“It really felt like this was the end as we hit the ceiling twice, then the ground, and flew through the ceiling,” wrote passenger @MattRPD. “Happy to be home again,” the Twitch streamer said. He was taken to hospital after landing. Diagnosis : broken neck.
His mate Abi spoke on the X program of a “horrific journey”. “I hate flying, so I rarely get out of my seat unless I have to,” she wrote. “The pilot announced turbulence and told us to sit down. Literally a second later me and others hit the ceiling. You can see my hair in the cracks. “The crew was very helpful,” she adds. Abby also wondered at one point “if this was the case” and she was going to die.
The injured on board were cared for by the crew and fellow passengers with medical backgrounds. They were reinforced with medical teams on the ground via satellite communication. At least one passenger was given oxygen.
Flight EK421 eventually landed safely in Dubai at around 4:45 am local time, where the injured passengers and crew were taken to hospital to receive medical care. An Emirates spokesperson confirmed the incident, describing it as a “short-term and unexpected disruption.”
