A major setback for proponents of small modular reactors (SMR). What was supposed to be the first commercial venture in the United States has stalled. The reason: Costs rise to the point where potential customers become frustrated.

Why is this important?

Almost everywhere in the world, including Europe and even Belgium, small and medium-sized companies are seen as allies in the energy transition. They are smaller, less expensive, and more practical than conventional nuclear power plants.

  • Last week, US startup NuScale announced that its Carbon Free Power Project (CFPP) would be shut down. This project will be the first commercial SMR project in the United States.
