At the end of October, an 88-year-old man from the Spittal area bought several hundred euros worth of cryptocurrencies online. What was intended as an investment turned out to be a scam.

The victim was asked over the phone to provide a copy of his ID in order to legally complete the purchase. The 88-year-old responded to this request. After some time, a call came from an anonymous person who reported that an account had been created for the 88-year-old man with several thousand euros in it, and that he should transfer this amount. To do this, it is necessary to install a program on the computer to be able to make payment via Remote Desktop.
After that, the required amount was deposited. On October 31, another transaction was executed on this account, ultimately resulting in damage amounting to a low five-figure amount in euros. The 88-year-old then filed a complaint on November 2.
