The administration assures that “everything is being done” to get people out of there. The ministry said, “The order of people accepted at the border crossing is determined by the countries concerned.” This mainly concerns Egypt, Israel and Qatar. The ministry also says it will inform people in Gaza immediately if they are reported to have been allowed to cross the border.
Ed Cronenberg says that contact with these people does not mean that it is always possible to leave the area. He served as ambassador for many years and participated in the evacuation of the Dutch from Libya in 2011. “It is all very difficult.” If people are allowed to cross the border, they will still need transportation to get there.
People with foreign passports or other close ties to foreign countries have been allowed to leave Gaza on a gradual basis since Wednesday. According to the authorities, they must be on a pre-approved list. These lists are published with evacuees invited to report to the Rafah border crossing at 6:00 am (Dutch time).
Friday’s list includes 367 names from the United States, 127 from the United Kingdom, and 51 from Germany. A total of 621 names are listed, also from France, Italy, Indonesia and Mexico. In recent days, the number of people who have actually crossed the border has been lower than the number of names on the list.
