Biden announced the news on Thursday. The American President said that he does not believe in this solution, but he is forced to continue with the plan. Legislation to expand the wall was already introduced under his predecessor, Donald Trump.
In 2019, Trump released funds to expand the wall along the border with Mexico. The Department of Homeland Security now states that the expansion is necessary because of the rapid growth in the number of people trying to cross the border.
The wall is being expanded along the Texas-Mexico border. The United States will also return Venezuelans who entered the country illegally.
Problems at the border cause headaches for Biden. Trump’s Republican Party accuses Biden of lenience. Republicans have even threatened to thwart military aid to Ukraine if the president does not take tougher action against migrants.
Biden himself does not see any benefit in the wall. He publicly announced after taking office in January 2021 that “no American taxpayer money will be spent on building a border wall.”
However, the US government announced, on Thursday, that Biden will not break his promise, because this relates to funds that were previously allocated during Trump’s term.
“From day one, this administration has made clear that a border wall is not the answer,” Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas said.
