Armenia asks Europe to help shelter Nagorno-Karabakh refugees outside

Brian Rodriguez, September 30, 2023

Armenia has asked the European Union to help host residents who fled Nagorno-Karabakh. This was reported by the press service of Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.

Within a few days, more than 100,000 residents of Nagorno-Karabakh, an enclave in Azerbaijan populated by a majority of ethnic Armenians, fled to the motherland.

The Armenian capital Yerevan is asking the European Union to provide temporary shelter and medical equipment. According to aid workers, many refugees are starving and there is a shortage of medicine.

According to Meloni, Italy and Armenia are currently working together to ensure stability in the region. The United Nations also announced that it will send an aid mission to Armenia at the end of this week.

On September 19 and 20, Azerbaijan invaded Nagorno-Karabakh, claiming control over the disputed region for decades. As a result, a large influx of refugees began. Azerbaijan says residents can stay to “reintegrate”, but many fear ethnic cleansing at the hands of Baku.

Until recently, the population of Nagorno-Karabakh was about 120,000 people. But expectations indicate that almost all of them will leave the country. According to a representative of the separatist government in the enclave, “the last groups of residents” are now on their way to Armenia.
