In a short post on X, formerly Twitter, OpenAI noted that ChatGPT now has access to the Internet. This allows the chatbot to provide users with the most up-to-date information. In addition, the answers that ChatGPT typically provides in natural language are now augmented with links to sources.

Until now, ChatGPT has only had access to knowledge until September 2021. Naturally, this information was often out of date. Several extensions are designed to connect your chatbot to the Internet, including our own extension, “Browsing with ChatGPT.” These are generally only available to paying subscribers. However, this also applies to the now announced web-accessible version of ChatGPT – people with Plus and Enterprise accounts can now access it. Since introducing “Browsing with ChatGPT,” OpenAI wrote, they have received a lot of feedback. There have also been updates that include tracking robots.txt and defining user agents so websites can control how ChatGPT interacts with them.
OpenAI also explains that browsing is particularly useful for certain purposes, such as planning a trip. This is a frequent example when presenting AI applications; Google has used image in its upcoming AI search, Generative Search Experience, as Microsoft has done with Bing. Google’s generative search experiment, Google’s chatbot Bard, and Microsoft’s Bing of course have access to all current information from the Internet.
