WhatsApp has a new protection function. You can now mute incoming calls from unknown people and protect yourself from spam and phone scam attempts through the app. How to set the function and update your data protection check.

This is what WhatsApp’s new mute function can do

You know how it feels: suddenly a call comes from an unknown number on WhatsApp and you don’t know who is behind it or whether you should accept the call. Calls from numbers you haven’t saved in your contacts list can also be spam or scam calls. Not only is it annoying, but it should also be taken with caution. Scammers use tricks that are usually not immediately obvious: they may trick you into entering into a contract without you consciously noticing anything during the phone call, or they may set you up for one of their scams. This can have far-reaching consequences.

In the clip: Will we soon be able to send video messages via WhatsApp?

Be careful of this WhatsApp trap, it is an insidious scam. The danger also lies in some calls: scammers are behind these phone numbers. Do you already know about this new feature? WhatsApp offers a chat blocking feature.

That’s why WhatsApp’s new mute function has come in handy. By setting ‘Ignore calls from unknown people’, calls from people you don’t know are automatically screened and unwanted calls or scams are also ignored. Your smartphone will not ring at all if you receive a call from a number that is not saved in your contacts list. Potential calls from unknown numbers will then be displayed in your call list and in your notifications.

This is how you can activate the protection function

In the WhatsApp app, go to Privacy under Settings and tap Calls. There you can move the small slider to the right in the “Mute Calls from Unknown” field until the background of the slider turns green. This shows you that the mute function is now activated and you will no longer receive calls from unknown numbers.

Data protection checking is also new to WhatsApp

WhatsApp also now offers a new way to check your security settings in one place within the app. This makes it easier for users to keep track of things. Through WhatsApp’s Data Protection Checkup, you can see what security options the app offers and the settings you currently have made. You will be guided through your privacy settings in several steps and you can select the level of protection that is right for you. Among other things, you can check who can contact you, whether others can see when you were last online, or decide whether you want to make your WhatsApp account more secure with a screen lock or two-step verification.

You can find the Data Protection Check in the app settings under Data Protection. A field will then appear at the top where you can start checking your current settings and make possible changes.
