Angelina Jolie is stepping down as envoy of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. The American actress announced this on her Instagram on Friday. Jolie has been a United Nations ambassador since 2001, during which she participated in more than sixty field missions in refugee camps and conflict zones as the face of the organization.

Jolie came during the filming of the movie Tomb rider Cambodia is in extreme poverty. She contacted the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, and a few months later she went on her first field assignment to Sierra Leone and Tanzania. Since then, Jolie has become known for her charitable work, which she displays extensively in the media and on the Internet.

“I support many things the United Nations is doing, especially in the lives saved through emergency aid,” wrote Jolie, 47. “UNHCR is full of amazing people who make a difference to the lives of others every single day.” The well-known actress says she intends to continue working to help refugees. The reason for her departure is unknown.

UN High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi said in a statement that he was grateful for Jolie’s work. “After a long and successful time, I support her desire to change her involvement. I know the refugee cause will remain close to her heart.”
