The Ministry of Interior has not yet received any reports of deaths or major material damage. In November 1999, Düzce already had to deal with an earthquake of magnitude 6.3. Nine hundred people were killed.
Earthquakes are more common in Turkey because different tectonic plates meet there. In September 1999 it caused a very strong earthquake with a magnitude of 7.4. It claimed more than seventeen thousand lives in the area around the industrial city of Izmit.
