Green party conference votes in favor of nuclear power reserve operation

The Federal Green Party conference supports Economics Minister Robert Habeck’s plans to enable backup operation of two nuclear power plants in southern Germany until the spring of 2023.

At the delegates meeting Friday night, a proposal from grassroots representatives to allow an extension of runtime or the extension process failed.

Instead, the party convention unequivocally supported the line allowing the Isar II and Neckarwestheim II nuclear power plants to continue operating until April 15 at the latest.

On the other hand, the Emsland nuclear power plant is scheduled to cease operations at the end of 2022. However, there is still disagreement about this in the federal government. The FDP calls for continued operation of the Emsland nuclear reactor and extended service life beyond the spring of 2023.

Is there a problem with the traffic light? The coalition is still struggling to come to an agreement after the Green Party conference.

This is what the party leaders say

At the request of the former Federal Minister of Environment Jürgen Tretten Some emphasis even found its way into the text of the resolution: nuclear energy does not guarantee more security of supply.

green leader Ricardo Lange He emphasized in the debate that new fuel rods or a return to nuclear power “would not happen to us.” Renewable energies need to be expanded. “Nuclear power is not the future,” the party leader said.

Federal Minister of Economy Robert Habeck He called the return to nuclear power a “mistake.” “There is no way this could happen to us,” he added. (I to)
