Much less gas was used in the Netherlands last week than in the same period in previous years. Gas consumption in our country was much lower months ago. For example, between September 29 and October 5, 538 GWh of gas was used per day by homes and businesses. This is at least 38 percent less than in previous years.
The decline in use is partly due to the fact that gas is becoming more expensive than in the past, which means that people and businesses are becoming more economical. Recently, power plants have also used less gas to produce electricity. Instead, power plants have chosen coal, for example.
Gas stocks in the Netherlands are now 92.8 percent full. One of the four storage facilities, namely the one in Alkmaar, is full to the teeth. Two of the other three are over 90 percent full. Only storage at Bergermeer lags behind.
Initially, the plan was to fill the gas stockpile to 80 percent by November 1. This goal was achieved some time ago. The government now wants to keep filling stocks, so it’s ready for a possible harsh winter.
