Leuthard advocates energy strategy. “I trust the intelligence of the Swiss people.”

Efficient renewable energies are at the heart of the Energy Strategy 2050. However, its implementation is slowly progressing. Doris Leuthard, a former federal chancellor and former energy secretary, defended the project in an interview with Blue News.

For Switzerland to achieve its climate goals, most transport and heating sectors must be electric. So energy consumption continues to increase.

So Switzerland is forced to increase domestic electricity production. In light of the increasing demand for electricity in neighboring countries, this is likely to become especially urgent if Switzerland has to import electricity during the winter months.

In addition, Switzerland will have to replace electricity from nuclear power plants in the long term, which will likely be discontinued from 2035.

But how will the increasing demand for electricity be met if the expansion of renewable energies is progressing slowly? Especially since the construction of wind farms and hydroelectric power stations has also been banned due to environmental organizations’ concerns.

So has the 2050 energy strategy failed? Doris Leuthard, former Federal Councilor and former head of the Federal Administration for Environment, Transportation, Energy and Communications, was responsible for developing Energy Strategy 2050.
