Riots in Buenos Aires over expression of support for Vice President Kirchner

Seven officers were injured in clashes in the Argentine capital, Buenos Aires, between police and supporters of Vice President Cristina Kirchner. Some protesters were arrested.

Thousands of people across the country expressed their support for Kirchner. The reason is the ongoing lawsuit against her. This week, the Public Prosecution requested a 12-year prison sentence. The attorney general also wants the 69-year-old Kirchner to never hold public office again. She is suspected of fraud in several bids during her two terms as president, between 2007 and 2015.

The biggest demonstration was at the Vice President’s house. The police wanted to prevent a large crowd. Then riots broke out. The police used tear gas, rubber bullets, and water cannons.

Protesters believe Kirchner is the victim of a politically motivated stalking. Kirchner denies these allegations.

After some time, the vice president invited the activists in her house to go home. “Freedom of expression is very important in a democracy,” she said from a makeshift podium in front of her house. “I want to thank you and ask you to come home to rest. It’s been a long day.”
