Protests in Suriname against the government of President Chan Santokhi have entered a second week. Despite some conversations between government representatives and protesters, progress appears to be elusive. A local news website wrote that the army had increased its preparedness regarding operations celebrity news.
The protesters, summoned by the Movement’s Organic Action Committee, announced that they would continue their protest. So far, the government has not complied with any of the protesters’ demands.
Every day for a week, thousands of Surinamese took to the streets to protest against the Santogi government. They have prepared a list of requirements. Among the activists’ important demands are a reduction in prices in stores, the return of electricity subsidies, the fair issuance of a plot of land, and an end to favoritism.
They also want to suspend the Minister of Finance over a scandal related to fake receipts. This includes just under 47 million Surinamese dollars (more than 1.9 million euros).
Santoji succeeded former President Desi Bouterse two years ago, who left the country with billions of dollars in debt. The new president promised to solve the country’s problems, but little came of it.
The government emerged last week as meeting one demand from the organic movement: to stop naming friends and family. Leo Brunswick, brother of Vice President Ronnie Brunswick, will resign from a number of positions and retain only one. However, this has not happened yet.
