Two Mexican citizens were indicted in a US court on Tuesday over dozens of dead immigrants found Monday in a truck in Texas.

The men are suspected of people smuggling that killed 51 people. According to court documents, they are also accused of illegal possession of weapons.

The truck’s vehicle registration led investigators to an address in San Antonio. There, the two men were arrested as they left the house.

The third suspect arrested was an American who was driving the truck. He is also expected to be charged, but he remains in hospital. It is not clear what is wrong with him.

Initially, it was assumed that 46 people died. It later turned out that 39 men and 12 women took part, all presumably from Central American countries.

The US Immigration Service discovered them in a truck on the outskirts of San Antonio, in southern Texas, about 250 kilometers from the Mexican border.

At that time the temperature was 39.4 degrees Celsius. Authorities said there was no water or air conditioning in the cargo hold where the migrants were.

Eleven people survived the ordeal. They were taken to hospital with symptoms of high temperature and heat stroke.
