The Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) said today in its preliminary forecast that the opposition Australian Labor Party will lead the country’s parliamentary elections. If the team wins, centre-left Anthony Albanese will replace Scott Morrison as Prime Minister of Australia. Morrison has been Prime Minister since 2018.

The current prime minister has already admitted his defeat. “Tonight I spoke with the leader of the opposition and future Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and congratulated him on his election victory,” Morrison said. Although not all votes have been counted yet, he says it is possible that his opponent will be able to form a government. Morrison also announced his resignation as head of the Australian Liberal Party.

Albanian says in the first reaction that it wants to reunite the country. “I think people want to come together and look for our common interest and look for that sense of common purpose. I think people are tired of being divided, what they want is to unite as a nation and I intend to lead that.”

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson congratulated the Albanian on his victory. He promised to work together on trade and make the world “greener”. “Both our country has a long history and a bright future,” Johnson said.

However, it is not yet clear whether the Social Democratic Labor Party will also gain a majority in Parliament. If not, the party must form a minority government.

With nearly 60 percent of the votes counted, Labor has about 72 seats. 76 seats are needed for a majority in Parliament. Both Labor and Morrison’s Conservative Party appear to be losing seats to smaller parties, such as the environmentally conscious Australian Green Party. Morrison’s party currently holds 55 seats. However, there are still no fewer than 13 seats that can be allocated and shifts can still be made.

Morrison’s Conservative government has already lagged Labor in the polls. There has been a lot of criticism of the prime minister lately. Under his leadership, the country has opted for strict lockdowns to curb the spread of the coronavirus, which has left residents in cities like Melbourne and Sydney locked up for weeks. This led to many demonstrations. His approach to the climate and the way his government responded to floods this year have also received criticism.
