In addition to the current view, where Instagram shows the user what Instagram thinks the user wants to see, there will be a “Follow” option for the timeline, and an option to view posts from only “Favorites”. Then there are only contributions to a timeline of accounts that users create as favorites themselves.

At the beginning of December last year, Mosseri had already promised that soon it would be possible to view photos and videos in chronological order. Since 2016 this is no longer possible. Instagram’s algorithm determines which photos and videos appear in the foreground. This has caused dissatisfaction for a while, in part because posts with a lot of likes have a better chance of showing up. Users complained that they saw old posts first, or that they didn’t see contributions from accounts they had been following for a long time.

A limited number of app users are allowed to test the three options first. The first option, Home, is the Instagram timeline as it now exists for all users. The algorithm decides what it sees in what order.

The second option calls the “preferred” company. This timeline displays photos and videos in chronological order from a number of accounts you selected yourself. Mosseri says he uses it to keep track of his siblings, along with some of his favorite creators and best friends.

Finally, there is ‘follow up’. This is the timeline as it looked for 2016. The photos and videos are listed in the order they were posted online. In this timeline, you only see posts from accounts you already follow. On the Home Page there will be more posts from accounts you don’t follow, but this will interest you according to the algorithm.
