The European Union will grant a “green” card to nuclear energy

The European Union will grant a “green” card to nuclear energy

Theodore Meeks, January 2, 2022

Russia Today: The Financial Times said that the European Union wants to give nuclear energy “green”, as well as natural gas.

According to the newspaper’s data, “the European Commission has paved the way for investment in new nuclear power plants for at least the next two decades, and in natural gas for at least a decade.”

The newspaper pointed out that there is talk about the arrangement of the categories within the taxonomy (classification) in the European Union.

The newspaper said it had seen a draft European Commission document stating that “green” status should be granted to “controversial” energy sources, including nuclear and natural gas, under certain conditions.

According to the newspaper, the decision was taken after the group of pro-nuclear countries led by France, as well as a number of pro-gas governments, demanded that the classification “do not penalize the energy sources that provide most of the electricity production in these countries.”

The EU classification defines a list of economic activities that are considered environmentally stable.
