Last Friday, Team Solar Twente won the first edition of the World Solar Challenge Morocco 2021. Teams from TU Delft and Top Dutch Solar Racing reached the top four.
For five days, seven international teams raced against each other in the World Solar Challenge Morocco 2021, a 2,500km run through the desert and the Rif region, starting in Agadir and ending in Agadir. From Australia to Morocco
You may have heard of the World Solar Challenge (WSC). It is a global solar car racing championship held every year in Australia. Well, not this year. Because of COVID, the WSC decided to cancel the race eight months ago. This came as a shock to the candidates, since most of the cars were already under development. To make the hard work still pay off, the teams organized an alternate race at an entirely different location.
The preference was for Morocco. There was less chance of the strict halo rules, and not unimportantly, more chance of the sun. However, this step was not entirely helpful. The Moroccan road is more hilly than the road in Australia. Some sections of the trail have a 12 percent gradient. Cars weren’t built on those slopes. So the teams had to go back to the drawing board to adapt their cars for the tough road.

Despite all adversity, the red horizon You have reached the finish line. To reduce drag, the team gave the red racer three wheels, two in the front and one in the rear. The tricycle has a 4x4m solar panel and a 40kg lithium iron phosphate battery. This enabled the solar car to reach a top speed of 135 km/h. And this is also very economical: at a speed of 80 km / h, the race car consumed as much energy as a toaster.
