The return of the Romanov family. At least that’s how some felt when George Romanov, a distant descendant of the Russian Tsar family, tied the knot with his Italian fiancée Rebecca Petarini a few days ago at St. Isaac’s Cathedral in Saint Petersburg.

It was the first “royal” wedding in Russia since the revolution of 1917. It was celebrated with luxury; At least 1,500 guests were invited, including a few royals from Belgium, Spain and Liechtenstein. Faberge family jewelers, famous for their distinctive golden eggs, designed expensive wedding rings.

The ceremony was in stark contrast to the way the Tsar’s family had been insulted in the communist era. The last Tsar Nicholas II was killed by the Bolsheviks in 1918 with his family. But since the collapse of the Soviet Union, many Russians have looked forward to a long era of monarchy with renewed nostalgia and admiration.
