In 1990, when debutant filmmaker Rajkumar Santoshi was trying to make Ghayal, he experienced unsuccessfully approached several producers to back the project. Not quite a few of them had been eager to produce the Sunny Deol-starrer at that stage, until Sunny’s father Dharmendra stepped in.
The film was eventually produced by Dharmendra, and on launch on June 22, 1990, went on to grow to be a superhit. Sunny told IANS: “Again then Raj was an assistant of Govind Nihalani, and he was but to make his debut as a director. We understood each and every other and he came to me to narrate the story. I definitely preferred the tale, so I promised him to make it. Of training course, Raj was a new director, so obtaining a producer was a undertaking. Whoever we went to, with the tale, each producer claimed that ‘yeh picture banao maat, chalegi nahi (do not make this film, it is not going to perform)’. Almost every person rejected the idea of the core story and absolutely everyone was suggesting alterations. Soon after exhausting ourselves with all the ‘no’, ultimately, we went to my father.”

Ghayal featured Meenakshi Seshadri, Raj Babbar, Moushmi Chatterjee, Amrish Puri alongside with Sunny. Just before the film’s theatrical launch, the actor-director kept a screening of the film for movie critics and other associates of the fraternity.
