France had previously threatened to cut off electricity transmission from France via a submarine cable to the island as a “retaliatory measure.”

    ‘Precautions’

French fishermen want to take action today in Jersey’s main port of St. Helier. But according to local authorities, the fishermen are not planning to stop things. Johnson said yesterday that he would send the two naval vessels to Jersey “as a precaution.” According to the prime minister, the blockade is “totally unjustified.”

According to French Minister Annick Girardin (the Sea), the British introduced new access conditions for French fishermen, allowing them to operate in the area for shorter periods and removing fewer species from the water. Girardine said he found out last Friday.

    ‘Absolutely unacceptable’

The UK has published a list of 41 French fishing boats that have undergone new conditions that, according to Paris, have not been “coordinated, discussed or notified” as part of the Brexit agreement between the UK and the European Union. “It is totally unacceptable,” Girardin said in Parliament on the issue this week. She fears that if France does not take action, fishermen will also be banned from other British fish-rich waters.

The island of Jersey is located more than 20 kilometers off the coast of Normandy. It is not a part of the United Kingdom, but a British Crown property.
