Federal Vehicle Safety Regulators in Michigan have begun an investigation into a new accident involving a Tesla Model Y electric vehicle colliding with a stationary police car while in autopilot mode.
During Wednesday’s accident, a Tesla Model Y collided with a blue Dodge Charger sedan. At that moment, the policeman stopped to record another car accident, the driver of which had collided with a deer. The police car was parked with the emergency lights on, and part of it was in the far right lane.
Officials said the officer and the 22-year-old Tesla driver had not sustained any injuries. According to the officer, the driver reported that the car was traveling in autopilot mode. The accident occurred in Eton County, about 100 miles northwest of Detroit.
The accident was just another in a series of accidents involving Tesla electric cars that have drawn criticism from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Meanwhile, this was the second collision between a Tesla car in Michigan in the past week. Before that, a Tesla electric vehicle drove underneath a truck, while its occupants were seriously injured.
Tesla has yet to comment on the situation.
