Denmark is preparing to build the first artificial island dedicated to collecting and distributing renewable electricity across Northeast Europe. The Danish Ministry of Climate, Energy and Public Services announced that over time, this project alone could cover the consumption of 10 million European households.

The island will be a huge energy center located in the middle of the North Sea, 80 kilometers off the coast of the Jutland Peninsula. Its ambitious goal will be to ensure the production of renewable electricity for an entire part of Europe. Danish Climate Minister Dan Jørgensen said it is the largest construction project in Denmark’s history.

A critical step in the European energy transition

Should be approximately the total island area 120,000 square meters It should be able, as a first step, to supply 3 million homes with green energy. The project will be a public-private partnership between the Danish state and private companies.

This new energy center will be a veritable power plant that collects and distributes green electricity directly from the several hundred wind turbines located around it.

As a reminder, offshore wind turbines are used Sea wind To generate electricity. In this specific case, this will mainly target consumers in the countries surrounding the North Sea.

This is a major development in the green transition in Europe and even around the world, according to Danish officials. Indeed, the European Union has set itself an achievement goal Climate neutrality by 2050.

To achieve this goal, 300 gigawatts of offshore wind capacity is needed by this deadline. So the construction of this power column with a potential capacity in excess of 10 GW is a very important step in this direction. By 2050, Denmark will no longer practice oil and gas extraction in the North Sea.
