Navalny Prosecutor demands fine for insulting veteran | Abroad

Navalny Prosecutor demands fine for insulting veteran | Abroad

Brian Rodriguez, February 16, 2021

In Russia, World War II is known as the Great Patriotic War. Veterans of that war have an untouchable position in society. Their criticism is seen as unacceptable.

This form of defamation is now punishable by up to two years in prison, but the facts in question occurred before the legislature imposed a prison sentence. Navalny, 44, described the case against him during the trial as “legal nonsense” and described the prosecution’s evidence as forged.

Navalny is already in prison for another case. He was arrested on January 17 after his return from Germany, accused of violating the terms of his parole. Since his arrest in January, violent protests have erupted across the country for his release and have been suppressed. According to the Moscow Times, the protest is spreading more and more places and increasing as a result of the chronic economic problems of many Russians. They use the demonstrations of Navalny’s supporters to express their grievances. More than 11,000 people were arrested in the final weeks of the protests.
