Black Lives Matter has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize

Black Lives Matter has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize

Brian Rodriguez, January 30, 2021

The Black Lives Matter movement is nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize this year. The nomination was presented by the Norwegian Representative Peter Eddy to spread the call for a systematic treatment of racism around the world.

According to Ed, the BLM has forced countries to view racism in their societies, the Guardian writes. “One of the major challenges in America, as well as in Europe and Asia, is growing paradox based on inequality. Black lives have become a mission of a very important global movement fighting racial inequality.”

Violent nature

The BLM was formed in 2013 in response to the acquittal of the man who shot Trifon Martin. The following year, the movement was highlighted by the protests that followed the murders of Michael Brown and Eric Garner. In 2020, more fierce protests followed in the United States when George Floyd and Briona Taylor were killed in police brutality. Protests were followed in other countries.

Critics point out that BLM protests are sometimes violent in nature, but Eddie maintains that most protests have been peaceful. “Of course there are incidents, but most of them were caused by the police or opposition protesters.”

Trump card

Under the rules of the Norwegian Nobel Committee, any politician in the government or national parliament can submit nominations for the Nobel Peace Prize. For example, last year a right-wing lawmaker nominated President Trump for his role in normalizing relations between Israel and the United Arab Emirates. Next Sunday is the deadline for the award at the end of this year.

Last year, there were a total of 318 Nobel Peace Prize nominees. The prize is awarded to the United Nations World Food Program.
