Pounds) of rocks and soil.

On Friday, the China National Space Administration (CSNA) released images of the Chinese flag placed on the moon’s surface.

The pictures were taken as the Chinese lunar module Chang’e-5 finished collecting samples of lunar rocks and soil more than a day ahead of schedule in the first lunar sample recovery mission since the 1970s.

The Chinese space agency said the Chinese spacecraft, which launched on November 23, landed on the moon’s surface Tuesday – becoming the third spacecraft to successfully land on the moon in the 21st century.

Late Tuesday, the Chang’e-5 spacecraft successfully deployed a pair of landing and ascending vehicles to the surface of the moon. The plan was to collect 2 kg (4.4 lb) samples.

The robotic spacecraft stored samples and raised them from the surface with the Chang’e-5 orbiter for the return flight to Earth.
