The messenger has been working with end-to-end encryption for some time now. Their purpose is to help secure your conversations better. However, they are now also used for backups. As early as 2022, the team behind Twitter Messenger (now X) recommended not only using the backup functionality itself, but also ensuring that backups are appropriately protected.
“If you enable end-to-end encrypted backups, all your personal photos, videos on WhatsApp and more will be encrypted when stored in iCloud or Google Drive,” the tweet read. If you activate encryption, you can protect your backup in the cloud with a 64-digit key or your password, WhatsApp explains in its help section.
Important: If you forget your password, you will no longer be able to access your backups.
End-to-end encryption for backups
If you want to create a secure backup on Android and iOS according to the service specifications, all you have to do is follow the short guide:
- Open the WhatsApp app on your phone and go to Settings.
- Click on “Chats” then “Chat Backup”.
- Last but not least, go to End-to-End Encrypted Backup.
