End-to-end encryption ensures secure handling of data on WhatsApp. But what some people don't know is that there is another important function.

IMPORTANT – What used to be Facebook is now WhatsApp. Almost everyone uses green messaging service to communicate these days. With various updates, WhatsApp is constantly changing. Further application development is often primarily concerned with the issue of security. For example, end-to-end encryption aims to ensure that only the user and chat partner can read messages that have been sent. What many people don't know: There is supposed to be a similar function for backup protection – and WhatsApp recommends enabling this function.

End-to-end encryption for WhatsApp backup – here's how it works

This is how WhatsApp explains end-to-end encryption: “End-to-end encryption ensures that only you and the person you're communicating with can read or listen to what's been sent – and no one in between.” The reason for this is that messages are secured with a type of lock and only the recipient has the appropriate key. This function occurs automatically, and users do not need to set anything.

The situation is different with end-to-end encryption of WhatsApp backup. Users have to activate the function themselves. Encryption can provide additional protection for personal files, photos, and videos stored on iCloud or Google Drive. This is how users can turn on their encryption for WhatsApp backup:

  1. Click on WhatsApp Settings
  2. In Settings, tap Chats and then Chat Backup
  3. To backup your chat, click Run and follow the password creation instructions. Alternatively, you can create a 64-character encryption key.
  4. Finally click on “Create” or “Create”.

Note: If you forgot your password but can still access WhatsApp, you can change your password. However, if you forget your password and cannot access your WhatsApp, you will not be able to restore your encrypted backup. (spo)
