Get ready for a special visit with the three koala bears starting April 25!

    A special enclosure for koalas

The arrival of the first koalas in the Netherlands requires a lot of preparation by Ouwehands Zoo, which got the scoop. The three koalas have been given their own living space called 'Qualia', designed specifically for the Australian species. Here you'll find cozy trees climbing, where hopefully the three koalas will soon feel at home. By the way, they don't actually come from Australia, as you might think. Our koalas, one female and two males, are collected from the San Diego Zoo in America. At the beginning of April, zookeeper Monique, who works at Outhands, visited the American Zoo. Not only will you be the first to meet a koala there, but you will also receive tips for caring for the special animals.

    Endangered species

Although you can only visit the koalas from April 25, they come to the zoo early. Then, after the nearly fourteen-hour flight, they first have to go into quarantine. Once the koalas settle down at the end of April, we can finally visit. A visit to Ouwehands for Koalas is definitely worth it! The koala bear is considered an endangered species. For example, the koala population in the Australian states of New South Wales and Queensland has declined by almost fifty percent in twenty years. amazing! This is due to Australia's numerous bushfires and floods, but also due to deforestation and drought.
