British intelligence has reported heavy fighting over the past two days in the Kherson region of southern Ukraine. Kyiv says it launched a counterattack there. In central Ukraine’s Kirovohrad region, three people were killed and nine others injured in a Russian missile attack on a military airport on Saturday, according to the region’s governor.
The Ukrainian army bombed a strategically important bridge over the Dnipro River near the city of Kherson, according to the British.
According to British information, the Russians are deploying artillery shells against the Ukrainian forces from the bank of the Inholets, a tributary of the Dnipro River. Ukraine’s military says it has trapped more than 1,000 Russian soldiers in the Russian-occupied zone.
At the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February, the area south of the Dnipro River was quickly occupied by Russian forces, having attacked from the Crimea. The provincial capital Kherson, located on the northern bank of the Dnipro River, also fell into the hands of the Russians.
Antonevsky Bridge in Kherson is the only crossing over Dnipro close to the city. The bridge is said to have been badly damaged by the Ukrainian attacks. The Russians made reforms, according to the British report. It is unclear to what extent the bridge can be used.
The airport and railways in the center of the country were damaged
According to the governor of the central Ukrainian Kirovohrad region, Andrey Rajkovich, during the attack on the military airport, 13 missiles were fired. In addition to the airport, the railway infrastructure will also be affected.
Rajkovic said one of the dead was a Ukrainian soldier. The governor said the other two were security guards at a substation of the power grid.
The attacks would have disrupted the area’s electricity grid. The local government in the regional capital, Krupivnitsky, said the area has been without electricity.
