UN fears ‘more atrocities’ in Myanmar as army gathers | Abroad

Brian Rodriguez, October 23, 2021

The United Nations on Friday expressed fears of another disaster in Myanmar in response to reports of thousands of military forces gathering in the north of the country. “We must all be prepared, because the people in this part of Myanmar are ready, for more mass atrocities. I sincerely hope I’m wrong,” said Tom Andrews, UN Special Rapporteur on Myanmar.

Since the military coup in February, there has been unrest in the Southeast Asian country, according to a local human rights organization, more than 1,100 people have been killed and more than 8,000 arrested. The reason for the army’s gathering in the north of the country is still unknown.

In early October, the criminal trial of Aung San Suu Kyi, the head of government sacked by the military, began. The 76-year-old Nobel laureate is on trial on four corruption charges and could face up to 15 years in prison if convicted on each count. Suu Kyi has been under house arrest since the military coup.
