When it comes to routers you can tinker with, we can't ignore ASUS in this category. The routers are widely customizable and part of the product line is supported by Merlin firmware – proprietary software you can install to do more with. This requires some technical knowledge.
In our opinion, the RT-AX86S is the best model to install the Merlin on. It's a good combination of everything you need: It's a stable model with five ports for Ethernet cables and Wi-Fi 6 that can reach speeds of 5.6Gbps.
ASUS offers routers with more bells and whistles, but they don't offer any significant advantages in the WiFi field and are therefore not very interesting.
If you want endless setup options without installing special software, Ubiquiti's Unifi product line is a great solution. Dream Router is a versatile foundation for a large-scale network based on Unifi equipment.
The proprietary UniFi OS operating system is core to these routers. It's well designed, provides extensive statistics and a good overview of what's going on in the network and with connected devices. The options for setting up the network and keeping users in line are countless and you won't easily run into limits.
Internal components are well chosen, except for the 2.4GHz radio chipset, which only supports Wi-Fi 4. Due to the older WiFi standard, performance on this band lags significantly behind Wi-Fi 6 routers, even though the frequency band is currently not generally used by equipment with high bandwidth requirements.
