The Olympic Games in Tokyo will be the most successful for the Netherlands ever. This is what economists Fabian Ten Kitt and Elmer Sternkin of the University of Groningen (RUG) predict.
According to RUG economists, the Dutch team won 12 gold (the same as in Sydney in 2000), 11 silver and 11 bronze medals in Tokyo. This would put the Netherlands in sixth place in the country’s ranking, achieving the top ten goal of the NOC*NSF.
Average World Cup success
Ten Kate and Sterken do not use a crystal ball, but they do use a standard economic model. They base their prediction on the average success of Dutch athletes during the last world championships in all 339 events that will be held. They also include the potential home advantage for athletes.
According to the United States, China, and its mother country, Japan Expect Ten Kate and Sterken Medals ranking. Also among the top ten are Russia, the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Italy and South Korea.
The Tokyo Olympics will be held from July 23 to August 8.
