The Federal Communications Commission (FCC), the US media and communications regulator, will ban equipment from Huawei and four other technology companies from China from the US. According to the government organization, this is the result of a new ban on devices that pose an “unacceptable risk to national security,” according to the FCC.

In addition to telecom group Huawei, ZTE is also affected by this action. In addition, the FCC no longer grants licenses to import or sell products from Hikvision and Dahua Technology, known for their smart cameras, and radio system manufacturer Hytera.

The US government accuses Huawei and other Chinese technology companies of enabling backdoor espionage in their technology. Huawei has always denied these allegations. The FCC said the new restrictions were necessitated by a new law signed by US President Joe Biden last November.

Chinese companies have a huge impact on communications. Statistics Netherlands reported last week that of all sectors, the Dutch telecom sector relies on imports from China. In 2021, nearly 26 percent of all goods imported by the telecom sector came from the Asian country.

Countries other than the United States have also banned or restricted the use of Huawei telecom equipment. This happened in Canada, Australia, the United Kingdom, Japan, Sweden, and more. In the Netherlands, Huawei no longer provides basic equipment for 5G networks. The Chinese group is still supplying equipment at the edges of networks for much faster internet.
