The Netherlands is currently the best performing country in European competitions. After the middle of the previous European week, Sweden topped the country’s rankings for the season, but the Netherlands took first place thanks to Ajax’s win over Besiktas.
At the start of Ajax Besiktas, Swedish clubs – of which Malmö FF was the only one remaining – had a club combined coefficient of 4,875, and the Netherlands followed closely behind with 4,800. Ajax earned a 0.400 coefficient for the Netherlands on Tuesday night, making the change of guard a reality.
How long the Netherlands will now stay at 1 remains to be seen. Malmö can help Sweden again on Wednesday, but then they must beat Zenit St Petersburg. The third-ranked Switzerland is still lurking, knowing that it started the season with four clubs: as a result, people get more points for every good result than the Netherlands. In addition, Portugal (four out of six clubs, three of which are Champions League participants) and Spain (all seven clubs are still active) also appear in the sub-ranking. So let’s enjoy this introduction while it lasts!
