The Council of Ministers allocates a maximum of 33.1 million euros to ease the pressure on asylum reception. With the money, security districts can attract more people who can help out at crisis emergency shelter sites.

This is what Secretary Hanke Bruins Sloot (Home Affairs) wrote to the House of Representatives today. The money will be divided into 25 security zones. The government had already promised additional capacity on July 1, but it is now clear how much money is involved. This is the maximum amount. How much money security districts actually spend depends in part on how many civilian employees are deployed, according to Bruins Slot.

With this money, each security district can attract a maximum of thirty employees for a period of three months. According to Bruins Slot, this group may include government officials who have been temporarily deployed, but also people hired by employment agencies. A total of 1,050 employees will be able to work.

    New location

It was announced yesterday that the Cabinet is considering opening a second temporary application center in the Ministry of Defense barracks in the short term. This is to relieve Ter Apel. In the new location, asylum seekers should not only find shelter, but also be able to start their own asylum procedure. Defense sites at Ede, Budel and Zeist are mentioned as “very suitable” places.

In today’s fire message, five aid organizations called on Prime Minister Rutte to take the lead in resolving the problems surrounding asylum reception in our country. “We can no longer accept the sleep of vulnerable persons and children abroad in front of the application centre,” UNICEF, UNHCR, the Dutch Pediatric Association, the Red Cross and the Refugee Council wrote in the letter.
