Synchronized swimmer Anita Alvarez passed out on Wednesday while practicing at the World Swimming Championships in Budapest. The American had to be taken out of the water by her coach Andrea Fuentes.
The 25-year-old Alvarez shocked the audience when she suddenly sank to the bottom. Her Spanish coach Fuentes, who was herself a successful synchronized swimmer in the past, did not hesitate for a moment and jumped behind her pupil.
“I had to do it, because no one cared about the organization,” Fuentes said. Mark† “I was scared because I saw that she was not breathing, but fortunately she is doing very well now.”
Alvarez was moved to the side and received immediate medical attention. She does not appear to have benefited from the unfortunate incident, but she will have to undergo tests in the coming days to determine the cause of the fainting.
Alvarez has competed in the Olympics twice. She was voted last year as the best synchronized swimmer in the United States.
