Switzerland has announced its participation in two EU security projects aimed at strengthening cooperation between armed forces. The two initiatives, which are part of the EU’s Permanent Structured Cooperation (PESCO), are “Military Mobility” and “Cyber Domains Union.” According to the government, the move is in line with Switzerland’s neutrality.

The country will benefit from simplified procedures for cross-border movement and transport, as well as improved cooperation in the field of cyber defence. This development will have a positive impact on Switzerland's missions abroad, such as training or the promotion of military peace.

    Participation in the military movement

Around 25 EU Member States are participating in the Military Mobility project, coordinated by the Netherlands. Canada, Norway and the United States are also participating as third countries. The initiative aims to facilitate the processing of cross-border transfer and movement requests.

Join the European Cybersecurity Organisation (ECSO)

Switzerland has also joined ECSO to bolster its defenses against hackers and online attacks. The country saw a spike in cyberattacks and disinformation earlier this year, especially ahead of a summit aimed at creating a path to peace in Ukraine.

By becoming a member of ECSO, Switzerland gains information on current technological decisions and developments, as well as access to expert networks. The organization has 300 members, including large and small companies, universities, research centers and European governments.

Switzerland's decision to participate in these EU security initiatives shows that it wants to improve its defence capabilities without losing its neutrality.
