Despite the upgrades, the aircraft maintains its familiar 175-seat configuration. However, passengers will notice a visual distinction between the standard and extra-legroom sections. The forward cabin features lighter color accents and increased legroom, a design choice Southwest says was “inspired by customer research focused on color psychology, comfort, and warmth.”
The overall aesthetic introduces new carpeting, subtle patterns, and deep blue tones complemented by sky blue lighting — a nod to the airline’s “Southwest Heart” branding. The lighting system adjusts color temperatures throughout the flight, designed to create a more relaxing cabin environment.

“The R2 model was selected for its slim design, which helps improve aircraft fuel efficiency while maintaining passenger comfort,” the airline said. Southwest also emphasized that input from both customers and crew members influenced aspects such as seat padding density and lighting ambiance.
Although the RECARO R2 seats are minimalist by design, their combination of ergonomic support, reduced weight, and integrated features aligns with Southwest’s goal to modernize its cabins while remaining cost-conscious.
Future Fleet and Retrofit Strategy
Southwest confirmed that the new RECARO interiors will appear exclusively on newly delivered Boeing 737 MAX aircraft. The airline’s existing fleet — primarily Boeing 737-700 and 737-800 models — will continue to feature current interiors for now, though select upgrades are already planned.
Between 2026 and 2027, Southwest intends to retrofit more than half of its 737-700s with power outlets, larger overhead bins, and modified cabin spacing to create a defined extra-legroom section. However, the carrier clarified that these older jets will not receive the new RECARO seating.
This phased approach means Southwest passengers will experience a mix of cabin configurations across the fleet for several years, as the airline gradually transitions toward a unified, upgraded standard.
