Scientists are developing a pathway that charges electric cars

Scientists and professors from Cornell University in the United States are testing a technology that allows electric cars to be charged wirelessly while driving. Purpose: a road that charges electric cars while driving.

The technology should contribute to the fact that electric cars reach a destination faster than fuel-powered cars, while using less electricity than is currently the case. In theory, there is no need to stop by this type of method.

Charging an electric car while driving

Scientists envision it as follows. If your battery is about to run out, drive in the right lane to charge your electric vehicle wirelessly. Researchers are also seeing opportunities for electric fields at traffic lights or areas where traffic often stands for a longer period of time.

Scientists have already created a system with these electric fields. As long as the wireless charging system located at the bottom of the vehicle is closer than 7 inches (17.8 cm) from the field, the battery will charge wirelessly.

The Tesla Model S has a ground clearance of 14.4cm and is apt for the new technology. The BMW iX3, 19 cm off the ground, is not appropriate at the moment.

My first practical road in ten years

Although many of today’s electric SUVs cannot be charged wirelessly using the new technology in their current form, the system could be a reason for many motorists to switch to an electric vehicle. The range increases, while the costs of production decrease. When charging is that easy, large batteries are no longer essential to the consumer. This has a positive effect on both the portfolio and the environment. But for now, this is still a thing of the future.

Daan Roosegaarde’s bright highway is here! At least in the OS

At the moment, many questions remain unanswered. For example, it is not yet clear how fast it ships, what costs such a system will cost and how it is tracked who is using the system. The scientists themselves believe that they can apply this technology within 10 years.
