Gary Lineker, Damon Hill, David Coulthard and Rio Ferdinand had previously argued for Lewis Hamilton’s knighthood. Now it’s finally time: the seven-times world champion in Formula One can finally call himself a walk after party with Queen Elizabeth.

Hamilton (35) has become the most successful Formula One driver ever this year, beating Ferrari legend Michael Schumacher.

The only black driver who grew up in social housing as the grandson of Caribbean immigrants, Hamilton also used his background to campaign for diversity and speak out against racism.

According to Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff, Hamilton has finally received the recognition he “deserves during an unparalleled and successful career in motorsport”. “The United Kingdom can be proud of being a champion and ambassador of the caliber of Sir Lewis Hamilton.”

Hamilton is the fourth Formula One driver to be jockeyed after the late Australian Jack Brabham and Stirling Moss, three-time champion Jackie Stewart and the only one to win the award while he was still racing.

Tour de France winner Bradley Wiggins, Mo Farah, Wimbledon champion Andy Murray and England cricketer Alistair Cook were also honored as active athletes.
